The Best Chocolate Chunk Cookie Recipe

Today’s recipe is my go-to. Like, if I am making a cookie… it’s mostly likely this one. For an event, a party, a gift, a wedding (I made them for my own wedding!), or just because.

This is my favorite classic chocolate chunk cookie recipe.

Last year, I launched a cookie cookbook, focusing on my top ten favorite cookie recipes to always have on hand. And this recipe is the very first one! It was the reason I fell in love with baking, and a huge part of my story and my blog. I first started making a version of this recipe with my mom in the kitchen when I was little. Memories of my childhood always involve fresh cookies in the oven or in a jar on the counter. I can still remember the smell of the kitchen as I would walk through the door after coming inside from playing. It is always my reminder that this is about SO much more than just the food. Baking is such a gift and provides memories we have forever. For me, the smell in the kitchen was the smell of love. And I still believe that to be true. The smell of baking is the smell of love.

In this chocolate chunk cookie recipe, I go heavy on the vanilla, use dark brown sugar and chop up the chocolate into chunks to make the perfect chocolate chunk cookie. Chopping up bittersweet chocolate is my go-to way, making it more of a bakery-feel and extra special. I love when the flecks of chocolate run throughout the cookie. But, if you do not have chocolate to chop, chocolate chips work too and this will be an awesome classic chocolate chip cookie recipe! If I don’t have chocolate on hand to chop, I will just use semi-sweet chocolate chips. Or, I will mix them and use both!

Here are the ingredients that you will need for this chocolate chunk cookie…

  • Unsalted butter

  • White sugar

  • Dark brown sugar

  • Eggs

  • Pure vanilla extract

  • All-purpose flour

  • Salt

  • Baking soda

  • Chocolate chunks (I love chopping up good quality bittersweet chocolate into chunks. You can also use chocolate chips)

I recommend making a batch of these the next time you need to bake a cookie. Or just because. Because let’s be honest. Some days just call for an classic chocolate chip cookie, right from the oven.

You cannot go wrong with these!!!
